United States Supreme Court, Washington, D.C.

Although the United States Supreme Court was established in 1789, it was not until 1935 that it had a building of its own. The classical Corinthian architectural order was chosen to harmonize with the United States Capitol. The exterior is of Vermont marble, and the interior of Georgia marble and Alabama marble. Probably unique in governmental construction, the court building cost less than the $9,740,000 authorized. The seated marble figures flanking the main steps are, on the left, a female figure, the Contemplation of Justice, and on the right, a male figure, the Authority of Law.
