This classical edifice, modeled after the Virginia State Capitol Building at Richmond, replaced the original Davidson County Courthouse ca. 1824. . The new building was built at a cost of $25,000. Because of its grand scale and design, state newspapers hailed it as a monument to local citizens' progressiveness. A fire damaged the courthouse's interior after the Civil War, and it was nearly three years before the county could repair the building. The Old Courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and, today, it is regarded as one of the foremost examples of temple-form architecture in the Southeastern United States
