Jim focuses on business litigation, and throughout his career has handled numerous complex cases in federal and state courts, the North Carolina Business Court, and the U.S. Court of Federal Claims. He represents clients in many types of disputes, including class actions suits, securities, antitrust and corporate governance.
Jim has been widely recognized by his peers and clients as a top litigator. In 2012, Jim received the James B. McMillan Distinguished Service Award, the highest award bestowed by the N.C. State Bar. Jim represents businesses in litigation involving federal antitrust claims under the Sherman and Robinson-Patman Acts. He advocates on behalf of clients in disputes between competitors, disputes between suppliers and customers, and litigation stemming from relationships between manufacturers and franchises.

Jim represents accounting firms and law firms on liability issues, usually involving corporate transactions that have resulted in claims of fraud, negligence, negligent misrepresentation, breach of fiduciary duty, conspiracy, unfair trade practices, and securities violations.
As an intellectual property litigator, Jim represents businesses in a variety of industries on issues related to trademark/copyright infringement, trade secrets, patents, privacy breaches and Internet and digital marketing.
