Legislative & Governmental Representation

Attorneys with our firm engage in a substantial legislative and governmental relations practice that includes representation of clients before executive and legislative branches and regulatory agencies at all levels of government. We represent clients on a wide range of business, regulatory, health care, tax, telecommunications, energy, technology, and environmental issues. Many of our attorneys have served in elected and appointed positions in the federal, state, and local government; this experience is an asset to the clients we represent.

Services we provide include designing and implementing strategies for the passage of or opposition to legislation; drafting of legislation and amendments; preparation of letters, white papers, fact sheets, and other written communications to government officials and other interested parties; conducting legal and legislative research; advocating positions to elected officials and their staff members; appearing before government authorities, boards and commissions; negotiating with stakeholders to achieve consensus and build coalitions among groups with similar interests; monitoring activities and reporting on those activities to our clients; and working with the executive branch and administrative and regulatory agencies to secure support on a variety of issues.

While performing these services, we work at all possible levels. At the federal level, this includes working with a number of executive branch agencies, members of Congress and the Federal Communications Commission. At the state level, it includes working with the Governor and cabinet agencies, executive branch agencies including the State Treasurer, the Commissioner of Insurance, the Attorney General and the Department of Revenue, members of the North Carolina General Assembly, and several regulatory agencies including the Utilities Commission and the Commissioner of Banks. At the local level, it includes working with county managers and county commissioners, city managers, mayors and city councils, and other local government entities. We also work successfully with members of both political parties.
