North Carolina Supreme Court, Raleigh

Photo of North Carolina Supreme Court, Raleigh

This Neo-Classical Building, made of North Carolina granite, is the sixth home of the State Supreme Court. From 1840, when the present State Capitol was completed, until 1888, the court met in this stately capitol, a corner of which is shown in the painting. The Justice Building, as it is known, also contains the Office of the Attorney General. It was constructed in 1939-40 with the partial use of Federal Public Works Administration Funds. The statute shown in the painting is of George Washington. On the east side of the Capitol are statues of the three presidents born in North Carolina: Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, and Andrew Johnson. Above the portico on the Justice Building is a statute of Solon, the Athenian lawgiver.
