Sam J. Ervin IV, of counsel at Brooks Pierce, will join Professor Melissa Jacoby for a discussion of her book “Unjust Debt”on Friday, May 9 at Scuppernong Books in Greensboro. The event will occur from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Jacoby is the Graham Kenan Professor of Law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The event is being coordinated in part by the North Carolina Bar Association’s (NCBA) Bankruptcy Section Pro Bono Committee, co-chaired by Diana Santos Johnson of Waldrep Wall and Brooks Pierce associate Jamey Lowdermilk.
The discussion will explore how a topic so specialized—bankruptcy, the busiest federal court in America—also greatly affects other areas of law and constitutional principles.
Ervin brings nearly 18 years of private practice experience and over 23 years in public service to his work in regulatory and litigation matters. He previously served as an Associate Justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court for eight years, a Judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals for six years, and a Commissioner on the North Carolina Utilities Commission for over nine years. He has held leadership roles in national regulatory organizations and handled numerous civil and criminal trials and appeals. Ervin is a Board Certified Specialist in Utilities and Appellate Law from the North Carolina State Bar.
