Elizabeth Troutman Discusses the Elon-Queens Merger on University Business Podcast
In a podcast published by University Business, Brooks Pierce Partner Elizabeth Troutman explains what makes a merger of two universities successful, and in what situations a merger may be necessary.
Elon University and Queens University of Charlotte recently announced plans to merge, and serve as an example of a partnership in which both sides offer something that’s beneficial to the other. In this case, Queens offers a more urban setting for students with more employment opportunities, while Elon is a small-town experience.
“The key for these colleges is to be thinking about what makes them unique and see if there is some alignment somewhere out there that could make sense,” Troutman said.
She added that while there is an array of legal and logistical pieces that make up every merger, improving the student experience should be its driving force.
Troutman advises public school boards of education, private educational institutions, colleges and universities on a myriad of education issues, and litigates on behalf of educational institutions in state and federal courts. She also helps clients in a variety of industries navigate the complexities of human resources and employment law issues, including employment policies and employee separation.
