Van Zant Announces New Proposed Rules for North Carolina Business Court

Committee chair seeks public opinion on draft of revised rules

Jennifer Van Zant, a partner with Brooks Pierce and the chair of the Local Rules Committee for the North Carolina Business Court, announced that a draft of the revised rules for the North Carolina Business Court is now available for public review. As chair of the Local Rules Committee, Van Zant works with dozens of attorneys to recommend revisions to the rules governing practice before the Business Court. The committee is currently seeking public comment on the revised rules from court users, members of the bar and the public at large.

“The revised rules are designed to aid efficient administration of justice.  They promote flexible and creative approaches to problem solving,” said Van Zant. “Our committee has worked closely with the Business Court Judges, members of the bar, and court personnel to consider changes that we believe will be welcomed by all who regularly represent clients in the North Carolina Business Court.”

The Local Rules Committee of the North Carolina Business Court provides guidance and input on the rules used in litigating the complex business cases and issues of corporate and commercial law that are assigned to the Business Court. The Business Court rules were last revised in 2006 by a committee on which Van Zant also served.

Public comment on the new revised rules is welcome through April 1, and all comments may be directed to Van Zant at The draft rules are on the Business Court’s website and are also attached below.
