My Practices

  • Ashley is experienced in advising individual, business, and non-profit clients on all aspects of Federal and state taxes, including tax planning strategies and compliance. She works to understand each client’s unique business, and provides practical and tailored legal advice for navigating ever-more-complex federal and state tax laws.

  • Ashley has extensive experience representing clients in Federal and state tax controversy matters, at both the administrative level and in court proceedings. She defends taxpayers in federal and state tax audits, and represents taxpayers in administrative appeals seeking the refund or abatement of resulting taxes and penalties. An experienced tax litigator, Ashley has appeared before the United States Tax Court as well as state tribunals at every level, including the North Carolina Office of Administrative Hearings, North Carolina Business Court, and the Supreme Court of North Carolina.

  • Ashley advises clients on the application of ever-changing state and local tax laws to their businesses as well as the interaction of federal tax law with state and local tax law. Having previously represented the North Carolina Department of Revenue in tax disputes of every type, Ashley has a deep understanding of state tax disputes and works closely with clients to navigate the complex audit, appeal, and litigation process. She is the co-author of the North Carolina Chapter of the upcoming edition of the ABA Sales and Use Tax Handbook.

About Me

I became a lawyer to make my mom happy. Little did I know, it turns out it makes me happy too! I love that every day in this career beings a new problem to solve and a new person to help. I also have the opportunity to learn from my clients, my colleagues, and occasionally, opposing counsel. No two clients are alike, and a single client never has the same problem twice. Cookie cutters belong in the kitchen, not a law practice.

When I am not busy being a lawyer, you will find me in one of three places 99% of the time: (1) in my kitchen, experimenting with something that tastes great, but may not be so great for you, (2) in a cycle studio, just trying to keep up, or (3) on my back porch with a heavy book set in a far-off place or time.

I’ll close with a haiku dedicated to my oldest rescue dog, Tucker:

I’m your spaniel boy
Have you seen my fuzzy ball?
Thank you, much obliged
